Bredsandsudde
Gotska Sandön is incessantly affected by sea currents, waves and winds. That the island changes from year to year can be clearly seen at Bredsandsudde.
About the activity
When sand from the sea is thrust up on the shore, the wind may blow it further
inland. Where the sand encounters an obstacle, a dune will form. If sand-stabilizing vegetation manages to take root and cover the dune, the dune formation will become inactive. If the dune remains bare, it may begin to move at a rate of several metres per year. This is known as dune migration.
If you walk along the red trail, you will see how the bare migrating sand dunes at the far end of the headland Bredsandsudde are finally succeeded by pine-forested dunes near Fyrbyn.
