The original Gotska Sandön National Park was formed in 1909, making it one of the first nine national parks in Sweden as well as in Europe.
The national park was then 368 hectares, and it was expanded to encompass the entire island in 1963. In 1988 the national park was further expanded 300 metres out into the sea.
