About the activity

Southwest of Stora Idgölen and on the slope leading up towards Idhöjden, you can see traces of as many as eight fires on a single tree! These traces are called fire scars or fire marks, and they are created when the forest burns. Pine trees have a good ability to heal their fire wounds by sealing the damaged wood with resin. A new seal for every fire – it becomes like a history book for researchers.

Boulder-strewn ground

From the entrance you can make your way to the old part of the national park, where the forest is oldest. Moss-covered boulders on the way up towards Stora Idgölen stir up one’s imagination.

Spillikins

On the way up towards Stora Idgölen, you come across decaying deadfall of impressive dimensions, the home of lucanid beetles and Fomitopsis rosea.
